Men of Influence: Men’s Group on Friday’s

There are 2 men’s groups that I know and love.  One meets Wednesday mornings and the other on Friday mornings–both meet from 6:45am-8:00am.  The Friday morning group meets at Mariners Church, room 204 (see map).  I have been a part of this amazing, life changing group for almost a decade.  If you are free on Friday’s…join them! Prayer Request Update re: Jeff’s cardiac arrest

I just received an update via email about Jeff’s condition. I know that many of you have been praying for him and his family.  PLEASE read his AMAZING journal entry!

I’m writing to say thank you for your love during my cardiac arrest, resuscitation, medical care and current recovery…

…to my Heavenly Father, who, obviously, holds my very life in His hands; Jesus, my Lord and Savior and the model of the person I strive to become; the Spirit of God, my daily strength and wisdom. Thank you for your grace.

…to Karen, Alex, Maddie and Ella, it is impossible to imagine a life without you. Thank you for loving me everyday.

…to mom and dad, for staying by my side the past 45 years

…to the rest of our family and friends, in the Port Streets (wow!), at the Boras Corporation, across Orange County and the country for your prayers, caring for my children and my wife, visits to the hospital to spend time with me and sacrificing time with your own families, coordinating meals…etc. etc., overwhelming…

…to St. Andrews Pres, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and my Friday morning men’s group, for being a model of what it looks like to worship God with our lives everyday, praying over me and reading God’s Word to me in the hospital, and prayer, prayer, prayer…

…to Hoag Hospital, my doctors, and the Newport Beach Paramedics, there are numerous exceptional medical people and facilities across the country, but none better.

There has been much prayer for me, and now from me to you-one of Paul’s prayers that has been a main life verse for me for over 20 years….

“I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you being rooted and established in love, may have power together with all the saints to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ and to know this love that surpasses knowledge-that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:16-19 (NIV).

I look forward to the opportunity to say thank you personally to as many as God affords me the opportunity. Just one warning, any hug over 3 seconds brings with it the danger of getting wet.

HOW TO listen to audio on UBERLUMEN

It turns out that A LOT of people don’t know all the options to listen to audio posts.  Here are the ways and options:

  1. Just go to the post and press the button and listen directly from the website.
  2. right click on the rectangle that says ‘AUDIO MP3’ just below the bright yellow buttons and click on ‘save link as’ and then save the MP3 file to your desktop to listen to it later or drag and drop it onto your MP3 player
  3. scroll down to the bottom of the website on the right hand side and click on the rectangle that says ‘itunes’ inside it and follow the instructions
  4. Open your itunes and you will see ‘itunes store’ on the left hand side…click on it…then on the left click on podcasts…then on right hand side click on ‘power search’….then in title box type in UBERLUMEN and press return…then click on the subscribe button next to UBERLUMEN…and you will be subscribed for free to UBERLUMEN….your itunes will automatically update your subscription and then you can listen to all the latest stuff from UBERLUMEN from your itunes or on your ipod…any questions??? (NOTE: if you don’t have itunes on your computer go to apple info on podcasts and scroll down on the left hand side to download itunes for free)
  5. SHARE THIS feature:  Another cool option/feature is the “share this” icon: You will notice at the bottom of every post there are the words ‘share this’ next to a green < sign…click on it and it will give you a BUNCH of options including adding the post to your own website/blog, emailing the post to a friend, etc.
  6. SUBSCRIBE by email feature: you can keep up to date by subscribing to UBERLUMEN’s email list by simply typing in your email address in the upper left hand corner at www.uberlumen.com and then you will be sent via email when there are 5 new posts…that way you can read the summary of the 5 newest posts and choose which ones you want to read/listen to…

Pandora: a FREE create your own radio station website!

This is a GREAT website! www.pandora.com!!! Check it out. Sign up and you can create your own radio station to listen to over the internet. You can put in as many music groups you want and then it will add music to your station that is similar then give thumbs up or down and it will continue to develop your radio station with music that you will like. GREAT idea!!!

God Questions Part 4

Prayer Request for Jeff and his family

Jeff, who lives in our neighborhood, suffered a very serious heart attack yesterday.  Karen had to administer CPR at the onset and is now at Hoag hospital.  He is currently in a drug induced coma and the doctors are stating that tomorrow will be very revealing as to the damage that has been done.  Please keep Jeff in your prayers, for quick recovery, no damage to his mind or body, wisdom and discernment for the doctors and for Karen and the kids to have strength during this extremely difficult time.

The Vital Signs of Healing idea is for anyone who cares for others. Just as there are 4 major physical vital signs, I have created 4 main healing vital signs for care givers: Value, Love, Virtue, and Healing. In addition to the myriad other topics that I will continue to post at uberlumen.  I will be posting my Vital Signs of Healing discoveries as they relate to my personal experiences with patients, co-workers, family, and friends. It is my hope that these posts may encourage and inspire all of us in the process of becoming better care givers.

Miracles and Healings #1: Why don’t we and Why should we?

I had the pleasure to have a meal with an old friend who has broken from the traditional approach to missionary work abroad and has embraced the Acts church model of miracles and healings.  It is amazing to listen to his wisdom and insights.  I have interviewed him in a 4 part series for you.  This first segment of the interview is his answer to my question: What do I need to do to grow in embracing miracles and healings ministry?

In this segment, he discusses the reason why theologically we as American Protestant Christians don’t believe or embrace miracles and healing ministry.  He points out that God’s will is ALWAYS GOOD and ALWAYS wanting the sick and lame to be HEALED, but God’s will is not always accomplished through us.    We get, yet another, glimpse into what it means to usher into this dark world the Kingdom of God.  As my friend is fond of saying: “Where the Kingdom of God is Cancer isn’t.”

As many of you know, I am a skeptic so I delve into this realm with a mega-dose of skepticism, but knowing my friend who was born and raised down the street from me in the same western mind set on this subject and hearing his wisdom and his own healthy skepticism, I am warming up to this AMAZING ministry!

Evil and Suffering, Passing the Blame

It took me some time to see it (15 years), but it finally dawned on me as I observed another doctor do it.  I saw a patient who was dying of end stage liver disease from alcoholism.  The first question that the admitting doctor asked the patient was “When was the last time that you had a drink?”  How is that relevant at the end of this patients life?

I have been guilty of this as well.  I have seen patients dying of lung cancer that I have asked if they smoked and how much.  WHY?!! There is no medical reason to ask.  We ask these types of questions because it makes us feel better.  We think to ourselves:  1. They are to blame for their demise and 2. I won’t get this horrible disease because I don’t smoke or I don’t drink.

The blame game does NOTHING to help with the suffering, the evil, the tragedies, the messes of life.  We must rise above the blame game to ask ourselves how can I help others through this and to help heal the pain with God’s help.

We all play the blame game and look for someone to blame.

Working on a LIVE wire

Periodically, I will be sharing my favorite you tube clips.  This one is amazing: great music overlay with an amazing video of someone who fixes electrical problems on live wires! One of the comments on you tube said that the electrical line is 400 or 600 kV and if you touch any part that is connected with the ground you are instantaneous dead!

Appropriate movies for tweeners: 11-13 year old kids

As I have mentioned in the past, I continue to struggle to solve the tension between my 11 year old son’s desire to watch all PG 13 movies that his friends get to watch and my concerns about his exposure to unhealthy material.  I have yet to find a reliable list or review source to give me a clear thumbs up or down on movies appropriate for tweeners: 11 to 13 year olds.

The best 2 resources are: plugged in and rotten tomatoes but they still are not always accurate or clear in their recommendations.

Learn to Love your Enemy

Prayer Request become a bone marrow donor

Please PRAY and consider becoming a donor for my friend’s sister-in-law:

Dear Friends,
As some of you know, my sister-in-law, Lisa, was diagnosed with blood cancer (Acute Myelogenous Leukemia) on June 21, 2008.  Right now Lisa MUST have a bone marrow transplant in order to survive.  An exhaustive search of current available donors has not produced a matching donor. Please see the two attachments for more information on becoming a donor. The process is fairly easy. We have teamed-up with DKMS (
www.dkmsamericas.org) for a donor drive.  First, you can check your eligibility at the DKMS website (donors cannot have diabetes, heart disease, etc).  Second, there are two ways to register to become a donor: 1) come by our donor drive this Friday or Saturday at my father’s ministry office located at 3636 Westminster Ave, Santa Ana. Or, 2) go to the DKMS website and they will mail you a swab kit for free.  Either way, it’s a simple process of rubbing a swab on your cheek. After the swab is analyzed (2-3 weeks) and a matching donor is found, the transplant is usually taken by blood.  Eighty percent of the time, the needed cells are donated through blood. Please help us find a donor.  Time is of the essence since only 20% of patients find a matching donor. Lisa must have a bone marrow transplant to survive.  You or someone you know could save Lisa’s life.  Please pray for Lisa.  Please help us save her life.
